Thawte Wildcard SSL is an Organization Validated (OV) SSL/TLS certificate that combines verified business identity with HTTPS encryption for unlimited subdomains matching your selected wildcard pattern. It is a practical choice for medium-sized and larger businesses managing customer portals, online stores and applications under one domain.
Also offered through the Thawte SSL Web Server Wildcard configuration, this certificate is powered by DigiCert and includes the Thawte Trusted Site Seal. It helps simplify certificate management while giving visitors access to verified organization information.
If you need a wildcard SSL certificate in India, NTSPL SSL Store helps you compare domain coverage, validation requirements and current pricing before purchasing.
Thawte Wildcard SSL uses Organization Validation. The certificate authority verifies domain control and the business behind the website, including organization registration and standing, address and telephone information.
Thawte lists most OV certificates as issued in one day with identity checks. Actual timing depends on complete records, successful domain validation and responses to additional information requests.
Verified organization details are included in the certificate. This adds identity assurance beyond a Domain Validated certificate; issuance is subject to successful validation rather than guaranteed immediately after purchase.
Thawte Wildcard SSL supports encryption of up to 256 bits. The encryption negotiated for each connection depends on the TLS protocols, cipher suites and configuration supported by your server and the visitor’s browser.
When correctly installed and configured, it helps protect data in transit, including login credentials, form submissions and checkout communications.
OV provides verified business identity. It does not automatically provide stronger encryption than DV or EV, and HTTPS must be supported by a secure application and server configuration.
A wildcard entry such as example.com covers unlimited matching first-level subdomains, including:
- mail.example.com
- shop.example.com
- billing.example.com
- portal.example.com
The wildcard pattern alone does not match the root domain example.com or deeper names such as login.shop.example.com. Root-domain coverage requires that name to be explicitly included in the certificate. A deeper hostname requires its own entry or a suitable wildcard such as shop.example.com.
| Website name | Coverage under example.com |
| www.example.com | Covered |
| shop.example.com | Covered |
| portal.example.com | Covered |
| example.com | Requires an explicit root-domain entry |
| login.shop.example.com | Requires another suitable entry |
| example.in | Requires separate domain coverage |
This page describes a single wildcard namespace. If you need SSL for several unrelated domains and their subdomains, compare an appropriate Multi-Domain Wildcard configuration.
New subdomains matching the existing wildcard pattern generally do not require reissue solely to add their names. You must still deploy and configure the certificate at the endpoint serving each new subdomain.
- Organization Validation: Verifies business identity alongside domain control.
- Unlimited matching subdomains: Protect first-level subdomains under the included wildcard pattern.

- Free reissues and replacements: Available under the certificate authority’s applicable terms.

Thawte Wildcard SSL includes the clickable Thawte Trusted Site Seal. Visitors can use it to review available organization, certificate and validation information.
Add the supplied seal code to a suitable location, such as your footer, login page or checkout area. Use it on hostnames authorized for the seal under the certificate order.
The seal complements your HTTPS setup and OV authentication. It does not guarantee that every part of your website is free from vulnerabilities.
The Thawte Web Server OV certificate family has a listed US$1,250,000 NetSure warranty limit for eligible certificate holders. The plan covers certain qualifying direct losses associated with specified certificate authority validation or issuance failures, subject to its conditions and exclusions.
This is not general insurance against hacking, malware or customer data breaches. Website visitors’ claims are governed by separate relying-party terms; the US$1.25 million limit is not compensation automatically available to every visitor.
Choose Thawte Wildcard SSL when you need verified business identity and HTTPS across multiple subdomains under one wildcard namespace. Visit NTSPL SSL Store to review current pricing and select coverage that fits your website and applications.
Who Should Buy This Certificate?
Good Fit
Choose SSL123 Wildcard when domain control is sufficient for the requirement and the required coverage architecture is Wildcard. It is best suited to teams that have a defined domain inventory, an accountable certificate owner and a clear plan for private key protection, installation, monitoring and renewal.
Consider Another Product When
Consider another certificate when the required validation, domain pattern, private key boundary, platform compatibility or lifecycle model differs. Compare the nearest single site, Wildcard, Multi Domain, FLEX, automation or digital identity alternative before ordering.
